Bayroute - A Culinary Trip To The Middle East

Hummus + pita is one of those classic dishes that looks deceptively simple and you'd be forgiven to assume that absolutely anyone can nail it. Especially ones that specialize in Mediterranean cuisines. But a night out at some of these spots and you'll quickly realise that it's not the case. Which is why Bayroute makes such a refreshing addition to the Maximum city's burgeoning culinary scene. After opening an outlet in Cuffe Parade earlier this year, the folks over at Bayroute are now bringing their hits to Powai as well - and we got an exclusive preview.

It's easy to find yourself getting overwhelmed at the menu, which is printed from left to right - with 80+ dishes. Start with the signature hummus - the most widely known Mediterranean dish, yes, but also the star dish here. It is outrageously good and even easier to lap with hot-from-the-oven pita breads and pickled vegetables. But if you prefer yours with a hint of kick, then opt for the edamame one. Meat lovers can't skip on the Lamb Shish Kebab that are succulent and full of flavour. Another hit is the Truffle Trida Cheese, which is deep fried vegetable balls dunked in truffle oil and topped with a spicy sauce.

Everything is going swimmingly well up until this point. The point till you decide to order the Baklava. Because, why not? You expect the standard fare - the rich, sweet pastry with layers of chopped dry fruits, cut in small bite sized goodness. But what you get is a generous slice of the expected - only with an unexpected topping of real rose dipped in liquid nitrogen and crushed in front of you for the drama, and the surprise inside layer that includes ice cream. And that is when it hits you, that you have to return to the restaurant just to savour the baklava on its own.

The food might be steeped in tradition, but the decor is every millennial's dream come true. Think millennial pink (we told you) mixed with lots of greens and hints of grey. The bar here is undoubtedly the hero - a little like stepping into a Wes Anderson movie.

For a city that is increasingly falling in love with Middle-Eastern cuisine and the lack of restaurants that serve authentic delicacies from the Middle-East, we'd say Bayroute does a fabulous job. Dining at Bayroute will be one hell of an experience and we don’t see why you should miss it.
